Die Casting Parts

Structural Parts – skeleton of machine

  • Base – Bottom of machine used to support machine.
    • Must be used to keep everything aligned on machine without sagging or twisting
  • Platens- Stationary, Moving and Rear
    • Stationary – holds cover die half, located in front
    • Moving- moving/ejector die half is mounted, middle
    • Back/Rear- slides back and forth, “adjustable platen”
  • Tie Bars- elongated, firm, round beams mounted to platens used to hold machine together moves platens
  • Toggle/Linkage Mechanism- connects rear and moving platens, allows use of small cylinders for fast speeds

Electrical Parts –power and control machine

  • Motor– provides power to machine, uses hydraulic energy, located in rear
  • Solenoids– shift valves to control volume and direction of oil flow
  • Limit Switches– sensors, located many different places


Hydraulic Parts- fluid, fire resistant oil, works at high pressure and flow rates

  • Pump- 2 of them
    • One – oil at high pressure at low volumes
    • Two -oil at low pressure at high volumes
  • Filter- keep fluid clean, located at outlet of pump
  • Valves- control the amount and direction of oil flow
  • Heat exchanger- tubular tank, keeps hydraulic oil cool
  • Cylinders- used to open and close machine, inject metal, move slides
  • Injection- shot cylinder, plunger, rings, used to inject metal into die
  • Accumulator- tank to keep hydraulic oil
  • Intensifier- increase hydraulic fluid pressure

Safety Parts- awareness of hazards

  • Die Space Area– are where machine is mounted protected by safety doors and gates, guards located at toggle mechanism while machine is operating
  • Safety Ratchet- prevents machine from closing
